II. The history of Independence Palace in Saigon

The Independence Palace in Saigon started off as the Norodom Palace – a mansion built by French colonialists to serve the Governor of Cochinchina in 1868. With its construction finished in 1871, the Palace became the residence and office for many French governors during the period from 1887 to 1945.

After the Geneva Conference was held in 1954, The Norodom Palace was under the control of Ngo Dinh Diem – the Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam. Diem subsequently renamed the Independence Palace in Saigon in 1955, making it the symbol for the Southern Vietnamese government back then.

In 1962, The Independence Palace in Saigon was destroyed beyond repair by uprising forces and was rebuilt from the ground up following the design by architect Ngo Viet Thu. The Independence Palace in Saigon became fully operational once again in 1966 and served as the office of the President of the Republic of Vietnam.

As the legendary Ho Chi Minh campaign reached its pinnacle in 1975, The Independence Palace in Saigon received a minor bombing by pilot Nguyen Thanh Trung – a spy that the North Vietnamese army planted inside the South Vietnamese air force. At last, a tank by the North Vietnamese army ran over the front gate of The Independence Palace in Saigon and the Vietnamese flag was placed atop its roof, marking the end of the Vietnam war.

III. What to see at The Independence Palace in Saigon

The Independence Palace in Saigon spans across a total of over 120000 square meters, with much of the area covered in lush green trees and plants. A few war artifacts can be found on display around the outdoor campus, along with several tennis courts

The actual Palace building covers 4500 square meters of ground and consists of 3 floors, 2 mezzanines, 1 terrace, 1 ground floor, and basement. The interior of the Palace remains nearly unchanged and contains a plentitude of informative signs to guide your visit and provide historical context. Unless time doesn’t allow, it is recommended that you take a look at every nook and cranny of this place to understand in full the stories behind this landmark.

Fixed area

The fixed area is likely to be the first area you walk into when visiting the Independence Palace in Saigon. This area comprises over 100 rooms, each serving different purposes and taking on different styles of furnishing and decoration.

Among the most prominent rooms, the Chamber stands out for its spacious area, which can hold up to 500 people. This room, often used for meetings and receptions, is adorned with splendid tapestries and couches, along with several gorgeous chandeliers emitting a pleasant golden light.

The Cabinet Office where all important meetings were held

On par with the exquisiteness of the Chamber is the Cabinet Room, where internal meetings would take place. A few other interesting rooms include the Library, which houses important books and documents belonging to the old administration and the Strategic Operations Room, where military liaison from 4 tactical regions is handled and strategic plans are made and updated.

Additionally, the Basement, which consists of specialized rooms for communications and publication, is also a worthwhile visit. You can also check out the Presidential Family Residence or the Ballroom to get a sense of how life was like for the highest-ranking residents of The Independence Palace in Saigon.

More one hundred rooms of the palace were decorated in different style depending on its use including the Cabinet Office, the throne hall, the working office of the President, the banquet room, the library, etc

Themed area

The themed area puts on display photos, documents, or items relating to several themes such as the Paris Peace Accords or the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The articles on display are accompanied by explanatory text to ensure you get the most accurate history out of your viewing experience. There is also a dedicated exhibition to detail the history of the Independence Palace in Saigon itself, called ‘From Norodom Palace to the Independence Palace in Saigon, 1868 – 1966’.

Complementary area

The complementary area features historical items recovered after the Vietnam war had ended and peace was established. These photos and documents serve to illustrate the spine-chilling horrors of war, as well as the undying spirit of resistance of Vietnamese people.

Artifacts

The artifacts in the Independence Palace in Saigon offers a glance at how history played out in times of war. The most prominent artifacts are undoubtedly the tanks 390 and 843 – the duo that knocked down the gates to the Palace to lead the way for the Revolutionary Forces.

The German Mercedes Benz 200 W110 – President Thieu’s vehicle – is also on display, along with the M152A2 Jeep used by the Revolutionary Forces to escort President Duong Van Minh to the Saigon radio station, where he declared surrender on April 30th, 1975.

When it comes to Catholic icons in Vietnam, few have managed to stand the test of time for so long as the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon. Built in the late 1800s, the Cathedral remains a testament to the crucial role that its religion plays in Vietnamese society.

I. General Information about Notre Dame Cathedral

Location

The Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica is located at the heart of Ho Chi Minh City’s bustling district 1 on Paris Commune Paris street. Right across from the Central Post Office and not too far from the Independent Palace, the cathedral stands recognizably among the city’s most iconic landmarks.

To get to it, simply take a taxi or buses 04, 120, 18, 30, 31, 36, and 93.

Operating hours

The cathedral opens its doors to worshippers every Sunday when a mass is held at 9:30 AM in both English and Vietnamese.

II. The history of the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon

Shortly after the French began their colonization of Saigon, the Roman Catholic Church entered the city bringing religious services for the colonialists. Seeing the lack of an adequately-sized place of worship, bishop Lefevre began the construction of a wooden church in 1863. This church was completed within 2 years and named ‘Saigon Church’, only to be destroyed by a severe case of termites.

A competition was held to determine the designer and supervisor of the church’s reconstruction. Jules Bourard, a religious architecture expert, held the winning bid and decided to build a miniature replica of the Notre-Dame de Paris. His design not only followed the cathedral’s forms but also took on a Romanesque look.

Groundbreaking for the new cathedral was done in a ceremony in 1877 by bishop Isidore Colombert. All building materials were sourced directly from France, including the iconic red bricks that make up the cathedral’s exterior. After 3 years of construction, the completion of the cathedral was celebrated with a dignified ceremony on 11 April 1880. The ceremony was attended by the Governor of Cochinchina.

In 1895, the two bell towers were added to the cathedral, each carrying six bells made of bronze. Crosses were also installed on top of these towers, each measuring 3.5 meters in height. With the installation complete, the total height of the cathedral is 60.5 meters.

In 1959, the cathedral received a statue of Our Lady of Peace from Rome. The statue is made of granite and was welcomed in a ceremony held by Bishop Pham Van Thien, who was also responsible for ordering it.

Through many name changes, the cathedral is now known as the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, with its basilica status conferred by Pope John XXIII in 1962.

III. Unique features of Notre Dame Cathedral

On the outside, the Notre Dame Cathedral stands out as a more vibrant version of the Notre-Dame de Paris, donned with meticulous architectural details coming from the Romanesque style. The bright orange bricks that make up most of the cathedral’s exterior came directly from the city of Toulouse in France. While the bricks were not coated in any way, they have managed to retain their radiant color.

Another striking feature of the cathedral is a pair of white bell towers soaring into the sky. The pair contains 6 bells each, which are electronically controlled. It is said that you can hear the sound of all 6 bells ringing in unison from nearly 10 kilometers away.

The presence of Romanesque and Gothic architecture is even more prominent in the interior of the Notre Dame Cathedral. Inside the Basilica lies 2 rows of rectangular pillars with 6 pillars on each, representing the 12 apostles. Immediately behind these rows stands a chapel with over 20 small altars and white statues. A larger alter resides in the cathedral’s sanctuary. This alter is made of marble and adorned with 6 angels carved into it. The walls of the cathedral are lined with 56 colorful glass pane windows describing characters or events from the Holy Bible.

Our Lady of Peace statue

In front of the cathedral is the Paris Commune square where the famous Our Lady of Peace statue stands. The statue is surrounded by multicolor flower beds and flocks of lively pigeons, adding to its iconic symbol of peace.

Installed in 1959, the statue made international news headlines when a rumor in 2005 claimed that Our Lady’s eyes were shedding tears. While this could not be confirmed, it did draw much attention to the statue and the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Nowadays, the square serves as a popular tourist gathering spot for photos and sightseeing. Many followers of Catholicism also make frequent visits here to admire the Queen of Peace.

IV. Activities of Notre Dame Cathedral

Visiting hours

As of now, the cathedral is yet to be open to public visits, as it is still going through an extensive renovation project that began in 2017 and is expected to finish in June 2020. The project is said to be redoing the cathedral’s tile roof, switching out broken stained glass sheets and wall bricks, as well as giving the foundation some extra reinforcement.

Nevertheless, the Basilica remains a popular photo spot, with the Paris Commune Square still open to any tourists who want a gorgeous shot in front of it. Furthermore, as work on the front of the cathedral has finished, you are free to admire the Romanesque beauty of this landmark from a distance.

Sunday mass

Masses are held every Sunday at 9:30 AM in both Vietnamese and English.

V. Attractions around Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica

As mentioned above, the Notre Dame Cathedral is across the street from the Central Post Office, which is right next to the Nguyen Van Binh book street. Within walking distance, you can also reach Nguyen Hue walking street, the Independence Palace, or the War Remnants Museum.

During the French colonialist, Hanoi was separated into three parts which were the Vietnamese area, the Concession area, and the French area. The French area is also known as Hanoi’s French Quarter.

Minh Mang (1791-1841) is the second king of the Nguyen Dynasty. He reigned the country from 1820 until his death in 1841. He is well-known for his fierce opposition to the French participation in the nation and his stiff Confucian belief. The king put forward a policy of alienation from the Westerners and showed strong distaste for the Western way of thinking. During his reign, the government was invigorated and the nation was protected against the invasion of Siam. He is an eminent poet. He is also said to have 43 wives and 142 children.

III. History of Minh Mang Tomb

Source: nguyentl.free

Minh Mang Tomb is an important site in Hue. Located on the outskirts of Hue, the tomb enjoys a beautiful natural landscape that delivers a sense of tranquility and quietness.

Source: Instagram@pulceinviaggio

Kings of the Nguyen Dynasty prepared for their funeral when they were still far away from their death. In 1826, when the king was still 35 years old, he ordered his servants to search for a piece of land to build the tomb but not until 1840 was the land finally chosen. The geography mandarin Le Van Duc was assigned to design the tomb. The tomb was started to be constructed in 1940. After King Minh Mang passed away, his son King Thieu Tri continued the construction of Minh Mang tomb. In August 1841, the king’s coffin was moved to the tomb and buried. The construction was continued and completed in 1843.

IV. Architecture of Minh Mang Tomb

Source: Lux Travel DMC

The Minh Mang tomb consists of 40 different buildings, both big and small. Because Easterners are concerned about feng-shui, they have to make sure the kings have the best location to rest after their death. That explains why the tomb is located in the midst of mountains and rivers and the structure was highly complicated but organized. The buildings are well-proportioned and face each other in a symmetrical way, which reflects the firm, organized and conservative character of the King Minh Mang. The architect also made sure that nature was well-blended with the buildings. Visitors will be able to see the architectural harmony of the buildings, the lake and the trees when they visit the Minh Mang tomb.

Source: Instagram@u_jaesin

As King Minh Mang was an eminent poet, his tomb was carved with poetic masterpieces, which are said to represent the selective poetry of Vietnam of the 19th century. Many modern architecture still stand in awe before the then-architects’ talent of designing. Strolling around the Minh Mang tomb, visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the tomb as well as the talent of the designers. They can also learn about the interesting history of the King Minh Mang and the Nguyen dynasty in the Imperial city of Hue, Vietnam, which is arguably one of the most well-known dynasties ever ruled in the world.

There is nowhere in Vietnam that you can fully feel the creepy and sorrow atmosphere than in Hoa Lo prison, Hanoi. Displaying a collection of famous artifacts, killing tools and forms of torture in the French colonial time, Hoa Lo prison is the best representation of those inhumane crimes in history. It also honors the will of the fallen Vietnamese patriots.

I. Brief information

Location: 1 Hoa Lo, Tran Hung Dao street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi

Opening hours: 8 AM – 5 PM

Entrance fees: 30.000 VND/ ticket (50% discount for student card). Free for children under 15.

Get to Hoa Lo Prison: Hoa Lo prison is just 2 kilometers away from the Old Quarter and 1 kilometer from the Temple of Literature so you can walk there if you are staying in the center of Hanoi. It will take you about 20 minutes. Or else, you can reach to Hoa Lo prison by bus. Some routes stop nearby the place which is buses number 2, 32, 34, and 38.

II. Historical meaning

1. The name “Hoa Lo”

“Hoa” means fire when “Lo” means stove. It was named after Hoa Lo street which gathered a large number of stores that sell wood-stoves and cola-fire stoves in the past.

Source: Lux Travel DMC

2. History of Hoa Lo prison

The prison was constructed in 1896 by the French colonists as a central prison for both the Central and the Northern part of Vietnam. The purpose is to capture and torture those against the French colonial government such as Vietnamese patriots, revolutionaries, and political prisoners. Many famous Vietnamese revolutionary leaders and even five General Secretaries of the Communist Party were detained here namely Do Muoi, Le Duan, Nguyen Van Cu, etc.

Regardless of the brutal condition, the Vietnamese soldiers still keep their will and turn the chamber into school to popularize and propagandize revolutionary doctrines and activities.

At that time, Hoa Lo prison is called “Maison Centrale” ( which means Hanoi prison) or “Central House”.

After the liberation of Northern Vietnam in 1954, Hoa Lo prison was temporally managed by the government to imprison those who violate the law.

During the Dien Bien Phu in the air campaign, it was to capture hundreds of American pilots and prisons of war (POWs) included Douglas Peter Peterson who later known as the first US Ambassador in Vietnam and the US Senator John McCain. Those American prisoners ironically gave Hoa Lo prison the nickname “Hanoi Hilton” though everyone knows it is not like a hotel at all.

Source: Wikipedia

Hoa Lo prison was still active after 1973 then the government decided to relocate the detention area of the prison to the outskirts of Hanoi which now is the Detention center No.1 of Hanoi Police.

Nowadays, a part of the prison remains as a historical relic to memorize the heroic Vietnamese soldiers.

III. Construction and architecture of Hoa Lo prison

1. Construction and capacity of the chambers

During the French colonial period, the entire Hoa Lo prison is divided into 4 main zones: A, B, C, and D.

Respectively, zone A and B are for prisoners under investigation, less important prisoners or those who violate the prison disciplines.

Zone C is for French or foreign prisoners while zone D is for prisoners under the death penalty.

Source: Flickr – arcibald

Primarily, Hoa Lo prison was intended to hold 450 prisoners but the real number is much higher eventually with 615 and 2000 detainees in 1913 and 1953 respectively. It was about 25 to 30 prisoners who shared a small, dark and cramped chamber.

2. Architecture

In the past, the overall area of Hoa Lo prison was up to 12.000 m2 but now it is only about 2.500 m2 preserved.

The solidity of Hoa Lo prison is reflected in the architecture design, the walls, and the cells.

Source: Flickr – Richard Mortel

The biggest prison in Indochina and 1 of the three most brutal prisons in Vietnam, Hoa Lo prison is almost unbreakable with 4-meter-high and 0.5-meter-thick stone walls reinforced with electric wires and pieces of broken glass on top. The complex is constructed with high-quality materials to avoid jailbreak.

Although they are different in terms of area and functions, those chambers have identical features: tile roofs lacquered floors colored in gray. All of them are suffocating, lack of light and unsanitary.

The security is at its max when all of the building materials and equipment are directly imported from France. There are also watchtowers in each corner of the prison.

IV. Famous artifacts exhibiting in Hoa Lo prison

Being notorious by various brutal stories of torturing and killing people in a struggling period of Vietnam, the big collections of artifacts and killing tools exhibiting at Hoa Lo prison is the best representers of crimes against humanity.

Source: Instagram @binomus

1. The guillotine

The most famous and cruel one is Medieval guillotine. There are 3 parts of the machine which are a wooden surface, a cutting steel frame and a big, and sharp blade. On execution, after the headman drags the rope connecting with the blade like a pulley, the blade drops down and the prisoner’s head is chopped down immediately. The guillotine made Hoa Lo prison 1 of the 10 most notorious prisons in the world.

Source: Vnexpress – Ngọc Thành

2. The cachot

The scariest place of Hoa Lo prison – the cachot is applied for those who violate the prison disciplines. They were isolated and fettered all the time while eating, sleeping and urinating in the same place. Those detainees are given foods with mold and even maggots in there. Many of them died of infection, insanitation along with lack of light and oxygen.

Source: Flickr – meestapeta

3. The iron shackle

The shackle is to keep the prisoners immovable. They are fettered to the floor most of the time and beaten by the guards.

The leg shackle consists of 2 main components: the iron upper part and the wooden lower one. To escape from the chamber, jailbreakers often used fat and burned coal to loosen the shackles.

Being praised as one of the most beautiful pagodas in the world and a must-visit destination when comes to Vietnam, the majestic Tran Quoc pagoda stands out like a blooming lotus within the city’s West lake. The pagoda offers visitors a peaceful atmosphere featuring stunning scenery. With its historic, cultural and architectural values, Tran Quoc pagoda is a Buddhist hub in the past and also a relic of Hanoi in the present.

I. Brief information

Source: Lux Travel DMC

Location: Thanh Nien Road, Yen Phu ward, Tay Ho district, Hanoi

Opening hours: 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM / 1:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Entrance fees: Free

Get to Tran Quoc Pagoda: Just more than 4 kilometers away from the center of Hanoi, the pagoda is located in an islet within the famous West Lake so it is very easy to find. It took about 15 minutes to travel by car. If you search for buses that stop nearby the place, bus number 33 and 50 will be suitable.

II. The historical meaning of the first pagoda in Hanoi

Source: Lux Travel DMC

With its 1500 years of history, Tran Quoc pagoda is the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi. Its historical value was calculated as it is the capital of the Buddhism of Thang Long citadel in the Ly and Tran dynasty.

Originally, Tran Quoc pagoda constructed in the 6th century in the pre-Ly dynasty was named as Khai Quoc pagoda, which means National Founding. At that time, it was situated on the Red River’s banks. The pagoda name later was changed again into An Quoc pagoda (National Pacifying) in the 15th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, due to the encroachment of the river, Tran Quoc pagoda was moved to Kim Ngu islet connected with the mainland by a causeway. The pagoda was renamed as Tran Quoc (means National Defense).

Source: Flickr @Prof. Mortel

Whatever it is, the names of the pagoda always carry the wish of the people attached to each period of history.

III. View and architecture of Tran Quoc pagoda

1. Architecture

The ritual vibe of Buddhism is strictly displayed by the architecture and the interior of the pagoda composed of 3 main houses: Tiền Đường (the Front House), the incense burning house and “Thượng Điện” (the Upper House).

In the garden, there is a huge Bodhi tree with heart-shaped leaves. The tree is donated by the former President of India Rajendra Prasad when he visited Hanoi in 1959. The Bodhi is regarded as sacred – the tree of previous Buddhas by Buddhists that symbolizes supreme knowledge and awakening.

Source: Flickr @Prof. Mortel

The highlight of the complex is a 15-meter-tall stupa (“Bảo Tháp Lục Độ Đài Sen”) with 11 floors constructed in 1998. In the top of the tower is a 9-story sculpture of a lotus flower (“Cửu đỉnh liên hoa”) made from gemstones. Lotus is the national flower of Vietnam and also represents purity, enlightenment, and achievement. The pagoda is in red because this color symbolizes luck and prosperity in Chinese and Vietnamese beliefs.

2. Cultural Values And Scenery

Besides the unique architecture, the historic and cultural values of the pagoda are remarkable. Tran Quoc pagoda conserves a big collection of worshipping Buddhist statues, antiques, ancient steles as well as poems and distichs of Vietnamese kings under the Nguyen dynasty.

Source: Lux Travel DMC

Regarding the breath-taking surrounding landscape, the majestic Tran Quoc pagoda is a favorite destination of many Kings of Vietnam to sightseeing in Tet holiday and full moon festivals. Years go by and this place still welcomes thousands of Buddhist monks and worshippers all around the country per year to celebrate special ceremonies such as Buddha’s Birthday, Vu Lan Festival and the animal release rituals. Furthermore, because Tran Quoc pagoda stands between Truc Bach lake and West lake, it provides a wonderful view for sunset lovers in the evening.
In 2016, Tran Quoc pagoda is praised as one of the sixteen most beautiful pagoda in the world by Dailymail UK and ranked the third by wanderlust.co.uk in 2017.

Hanoi Train Street is one of the most famous tourist hot spots due to the visual contrast of the single track to homes and cafes. However, you’ve probably seen some regretful news about the famous train Street cafe in Hanoi was shut down? That it’s probably true because of safety reasons, Hanoi authorities decided to close this street on 12 October 2019 but kept functioning 118-year-old railway track.

Therefore, we still have ways! According to some reviews about Hanoi Train Street recently, you still have a chance to visit this unique place if you are escorted by one of the shop owners or local residents as you booked a hostel there or maybe a table in a coffee shop. Although you just have to be careful with the guardians there!

I. Life on the line – About Hanoi Train Street

Source: Unsplash @silverringvee

Hanoi Train Street is only 500 meters long with a lot of households living in this area for many generations. The whole Street usually looks like a beautiful watercolor painting. Due to houses, old and new, this place comes in different colors from dark to light along with an exciting and thrilling experience when the train is coming through.

This is one of the most famous attractions as a selfie destination in Hanoi, said by CNN – US channel. Many well-known newspapers and magazines around the world have written about Hanoi Train Street. It was a highlight and particularly rare thing in Hanoi city. This has become a favorite photo-taking spot of not only local citizens but also international tourists who are looking for inspiration.

Source: Instagram @metehan

People who live beside the tracks seem a bit misfortune when they have to stay in such a dangerous place. However, throughout the year after year, the railway becomes their silent neighbor while the trains are a “noisy due” and people get used to it. Thus, this Street now becomes an important part of their family’s life. While coming here to explore some unique shots, you also can experience and have some unforgettable memories about the local life while talking to local people.

Location: 05 Tran Phu Street, Hanoi

Open time: All-day

While exploring this famous Hanoi Train Street, you will:

Be surprised by the normal attitude and the peace of locals while living right next to the railways.

Be deeply engaged in the local life on the side of the busy and exciting Hanoi capital.

Take some remarkable pictures.

II. History

Source: Flickr @manhhai

Hanoi’s railway was built during the French colonial period and it was one of the branches of the North-South Vietnamese railway. In 1954, the trans-national railway stopped serving colonial functions. A year later, the Vietnam Railway Authority built a dormitory just a few feet away on either side of the tracks to house employees working in the sector. This dormitory started from Tran Phu Street to Phung Hung Street on a section of 1,24 miles (ca. 200 km) long and consisted of mud houses just high enough that people would not bump their heads when going in.

In 2014, the fortunes of Train Street changed when the area was published in some foreign newspapers and magazines, especially in the U.S and the U.K. The arresting sight of the train running right through the heart of a densely packed residential area made this place become a must-visit tourist hot spot.

Source: Pixabay @thomas_gerlach

Recently, the residents were in business as coffee shops, restaurants mushroomed. These shops give visitors the chance to sit down and relax and enjoy the most unusual setting while the sight of a train passing by at close quarters.

III. Cafe in Hanoi Train Street

Since Hanoi authorities decided to close this street, which we had mentioned before, there still have some coffee shops that can remain open with exclusive views. These coffee shops have the best view ever to witness the train going through. Besides the coffee, these places also have some local fast foods for you to grab a quick bite while watching the train pass.

V. Know Before You Go – SAFETY FIRST

Source: Lux Travel DMC

These are legit trains and not the things you should be messed with. Hopefully, it goes without saying that they will not and cannot stop if you overstay your time on the tracks and it’s never going to be worth the photo for an Instagram post.

Always watch the train. Do not stand in the middle of the track for as long as possible as some silly tourists. Instead, find a spot at the side of the track and let the train pass by without putting anyone in serious danger. Usually, you will hear the train siren from afar. When the ship arrives, please stand on either side of the house or the bridge railing and as far as possible from the track.

Finally, do not play or joke when the train is passing.

VI. Insider tips

Check out the train in the early morning or at night to take amazing photos.

Keep walking up the Street to the very middle for some amazing views, don’t be tempted to stop at the first free space you see.

Take your photos after the train passes because most people will leave the train then the tracks will be all yours.

You should bring a pair of running shoes with great elastic soles and avoid wearing heels due to the path being spread with stones.

A tour to explore the Old Quarters in Hanoi is a must-try experience for any travelers when visiting Vietnam’s capital.
2. Hanoi 36 Old Streets History

During the Ly and Tran Dynasties, the Old Quarter was one of the most dynamic and bustle commercial area. At this time, the Quarter was established at the East of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long along the Red River’s Bank. This commercial site was mentioned as the specialized area for trading and exchanging goods by Nguyen Trai – a famous scholar of the Le Empire.

During the Ly and Tran Dynasties, people from surrounding countryside started to migrate to the city and settled in where is now called the Hanoi Old Quarter. At this time, traders who came from many parts of the world traveled to this Quarter to exchange suppliers and goods forming a dynamic trading site in the North of Vietnam.

When the French colonized Vietnam, they renovated the area and turned this Quarter to an inclusive market to conduct their business. In this period, the Old Quarter was a place for both domestic and international trade as many French and Indians set up their business there.

II. Hanoi 36 Old Streets highlights

1. Architecture

Source: Pixabay @9636137

The Old Quarter is remembered as the best place to reflect Hanoi’s ancient architecture.

The most stand out character of the Old Quarter is it’s quaint old looking as its appearance has been remained nearly untouched for more than a thousand years. In this tourist site, there are many historical sights like temples, ancient houses, pagodas and gathering halls. In the past, every craft guild streets always had a small but solemn temple to worship the mythical founder of the craft.

Due to the passage of time and the destruction of war, many temples have been destroyed and there are few temples have remained such as Ma May and Kim Co temple. Like plenty of old temples, many ancient gates which used to locate in the Old Quarter have been destroyed and the Quan Chuong gate is the only left.

Source: Pixabay @9636137

House in this famous site is very small and the house’s roof is often thatched by leaves or tiles. This typical house is famous for its special name “tube house” and usually has three compartments. Because of the density of buildings in the city, houses in the Old Quarter usually have two or three stories while they are only several meters wide and tens of meters deep. This unique architecture helps provide light and ventilation for the house, so it is very popular in the urban area of Vietnam in that period.

2. Hanoi 36 Guilds

This special show has its origin in an ancient art form dating back to the 11th century. The traditional water puppet show uses to be performed in the flooded rice paddy field to thank for a bountiful harvest. Vietnamese artists hide behind a curtain and use a long bamboo rod to control the puppets making them floating in the water surface.

The performance often accompanies Vietnamese music which is played by traditional instruments such as drums, wooden bells, flutes, horns, and cymbals. Most of the songs in the show remind Vietnamese ancient tales and myths including the celebration for a great harvest in a humorous style.

IV. Tips on visiting Hanoi 36 Old Streets

The best time to visit Hanoi city is in the spring from February to April and the autumn from October to November.

Tourists should book the accommodation early, for in the holiday season hotels are usually full due to the high tourism demand.

Visitors are suggested asking about the price and cost before buying any items or using any services to avoid being ripped off.

Visiting these crowded streets, tourists can be easy targets for pickpocketing. So they are recommended to pay close attention to their belongings such as accessories, purses, passport, money, and camera.

Visitors also need to be careful about the hygiene of the foods that they tend to eat. Eating at a crowded stall may be a safer choice for travelers because the more customer the fresher the food can be.

Most of the local people can not speak English so it is easier to communicate when tourists can speak some simple Vietnamese sentences. Visiting these old streets with a Vietnamese friend can be the best solution to overcome language barriers and can get what they want at an affordable price.

I. Introduction to the Perfume river

Huong River, or known in English as Perfume river is located in Hue city and considered as one of the most famous rivers in Vietnam as its beauty has been mentioned by innumerable poets and writers. The Perfume river is the symbol of Hue city along with the Ngu Binh mountain that oversees it. A trip to the Imperial city isn’t complete without appreciating the splendor of the Perfume river.

II. The name of the Perfume river

Source: Lux Travel DMC

The Huong river runs through a forest that carries the flagrant odor of herbs, therefore the river is said to be sweet-scented. People in the city simply name the river after “Perfume” (Vietnamese: Huong) to describe the aromatic smell of the river.

III. Facts about the Perfume river

Those who have been to Hue city know that the Perfume river splits the city into two parts, the Northern and the Southern part. Nevertheless, the river stretches further, even to the ocean. The Perfume river has a length of 80 kilometers.

Source: Instagram@camondonghuong

The Perfume river has two main creeks, originating from the Truong Son mountain. The “Ta Trach” creek starts from Dong Dai, running through 55 small and big waterfalls to Bang Lang fork. The other creek is known as “Huu Trach” running through 14 waterfalls and joined the Ta Trach creek at the fork.

Source: Luu Ly – Wikipedia

The Perfume river runs through Hue city and various villages and then reaches its final destination, which is the ocean. Even though it is a faithful friend of Hue’s people, the river can sometimes turn her back on her friends during the flood season, causing a lot of damage to those who live close to the river. The water of the river is blue all year round but turns brown during the flood season.

Source: Lux Travel DMC

There are various famous destinations that can be seen along the river bank. One cannot miss the Trang Tien Bridge that crosses the river, especially during the night time. Metaphorically, the river is a mirror that reflects the colorful lights of Trang Tien Bridge at night. This is also the best time to take a dragon boat along the river. The river also runs alongside Vy Da garden which is famous for its green nature. The most famous place that oversees the river is Thien Mu pagoda (or also known as Linh Mu pagoda). You can have a breathtaking bird-eye view of the river, forests and mountains standing at the pagoda. The Perfume river then continues to run along the Nguyet Bieu village and then to Tu Duc Tomb, where one of the most famous kings of the Nguyen Dynasty rests in peace amongst the high mountains and thick forests.

IV. Tour along the Perfume river

Source: Lux Travel DMC

Going on the dragon boat along the river is what those who visit Hue love to do. Listening to “Ca Huế” (Hue songs) is a must-do thing. “Ca Huế” is a form of classical Vietnamese music of central Vietnam, especially Hue city. You will see the singer sings solo, accompanying himself/herself with wooden clappers or small teacups. You will also see 5 instruments being played before and between the solos, which is also known as “ngũ tuyệt” in Vietnamese. There’s nothing better than appreciating the beauty of the river and the city while listening to ‘Ca Huế” and enjoying the fresh and aromatic water and air.

Source: Lux Travel DMC

It is possible to book your tickets on your arrival. Ticket for a trip on the dragon boat costs between $6-10. You can book the ticket at hotels, travel agents or even on the river.

Don’t forget to bring the perfume back to your home every time you visit Hue!
