Recently, Pham Ha, CEO of Lux Travel DMC, embarked on a four-day expedition into this extraordinary wilderness, experiencing first-hand the challenges, beauty and profound sense of discovery that define Son Doong. His journey offers more than a story of adventure; it is a reflection on how rare experiences, responsible exploration and a deeper connection with nature can redefine the meaning of luxury travel.

For years, Pham Ha, Chairman and CEO of LuxGroup, had dreamed of setting foot inside Son Doong.
Like many travellers, he had seen the photographs. He heard the extraordinary numbers: the world’s largest natural cave, colossal stalagmites, underground rivers, sinkholes where forests grow beneath the earth, and shafts of sunlight piercing through the vast darkness.
But after four days living beneath the surface, it was not the numbers that stayed with him.
It was the feeling of cold water beneath his feet in the forest. The moment his headlamp was switched off, and darkness became absolute. There was no infinity pool. No temperature-controlled water. Wet black rocks glistened beneath their feet. Forest followed forest. Rocks followed rocks. The river appeared and disappeared as the landscape changed.Ha thought of Ho Khanh, the local man who first discovered the cave entrance in 1990 and later helped British and Vietnamese cave experts relocate and survey Son Doong.

“Only after walking across the Truong Son mountains myself did I understand how a gigantic cave entrance could disappear into nature for so many years.”
As the group descended deeper, daylight gradually disappeared. Headlamps replaced the sun.

The people walking ahead became nothing more than tiny points of light against an immense underground landscape. Rocks that looked impressive in photographs became monumental when viewed from beside them.
Ha had seen countless images of Son Doong before the journey. But photographs, he realised, always have four edges. Inside Son Doong, those four edges disappear.

When a Ray of Sunlight Becomes an Event

After hours of darkness, rock and challenging terrain, light suddenly appeared. Through a vast opening above, sunlight filtered through mist and moisture, illuminating the enormous chamber below. The Wedding Cake stalagmite emerged from the landscape like something from another world. On the surface, we rarely stop to notice a ray of sunlight.
After spending hours underground, sunlight becomes an event. And sometimes, the simplest experiences become the most memorable. After a long day of trekking, Ha stepped into an underground river near the campsite. “I was swimming inside a mountain.” No swimming pool. No shower. No familiar comforts. Just cold water, a tired body and an extraordinary feeling of being completely alive.

Pham Ha, CEO of Lux Travel DMC, Explores Son Doong Cave

Then came the second sinkhole, often known as the Garden of Edam.
After hours of darkness, rocks and demanding terrain, greenery suddenly appeared. It is like a world within a world – with rivers, forests, sandbanks, darkness, light and its own ecosystem.”

The Final Challenge

Near the end of the journey came the famous “Vietnam Wall” – a demanding climb involving an 18-metre steel ladder followed by more than 70 metres of steep rock, ropes and safety equipment. Seen from below, the challenge looked even greater. Once the climb began, Ha understood something simple: no one could climb it for you. The safety team could guide, protect and support you. But your feet still had to take every step.
And behind every small group exploring Son Doong is a much larger team – guides, safety experts, rangers, cooks, porters and local specialists – quietly making the journey possible.
In photographs, we often see a single explorer standing beneath a monumental natural wonder. Beyond the frame is an entire team.

“Son Doong Changed Me”
Before the journey, Ha had said that he wanted to “conquer” Son Doong. Afterwards, he no longer felt comfortable with that word. Son Doong existed millions of years before humans entered it. It will remain long after every expedition has left. A person who spends only a few days inside such a place cannot conquer nature. “I did not change Son Doong. Son Doong changed me.”

Four days without the constant connection of the outside world made the sound of water clearer. A difficult climb made every step more meaningful. A natural pool became a reward. And a simple cup of hot coffee became more precious than many of the comforts we usually take for granted. Ha entered Son Doong hoping to explore one of the world’s greatest natural wonders.
He returned with something more personal. Sometimes, a journey takes us very far from home – only to bring us closer to ourselves.

Son Doong Cave (Source: Oxalis)

A Journey Beyond the Ordinary

At Lux Travel DMC, we believe that the most meaningful journeys are not simply about seeing a destination.
