Techo Takhmao International Airport is the ambitious project set to become the primary airport serving Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Designed to replace the existing airport for commercial flights, the former facility will be repurposed to cater exclusively to the needs of government officials, domestic flights, private jets, and diplomatic missions.
Located approximately 30-40km to the south of the city in Kandal province, the new airport will be situated on a combination of former farmland and reclaimed land from a lake, covering an extensive area of 2,600 hectares. This vast expanse makes it one of the world’s largest airports in terms of land size, although it will not be classified as a mega-airport like Long Thanh or New Manila Airport. The airport itself will occupy 700 hectares of this total area.
The idea of a new airport was initially hinted at back in 2016, when expansion plans for the current airport were halted. Subsequently, in January 2018, the official announcement was made, and construction officially commenced in 2019. The airport was formally christened Techo Takhmao International Airport in December 2021.
As with any large-scale infrastructure project, completion dates have been subject to various estimations, with the latest projection aiming for a completion date in 2025. This eagerly anticipated airport promises to be a significant milestone in Cambodia’s aviation landscape, ready to accommodate the country’s growing air travel demands and facilitate global connectivity.
