I. Introduction to the Perfume river
Huong River, or known in English as Perfume river is located in Hue city and considered as one of the most famous rivers in Vietnam as its beauty has been mentioned by innumerable poets and writers. The Perfume River is the symbol of Hue city along with the Ngu Binh mountain that oversees it. A trip to the Imperial city isn’t complete without appreciating the splendor of the Perfume River.
II. The name of the Perfume river
The Huong river runs through a forest that carries the flagrant odor of herbs, therefore the river is said to be sweet-scented. People in the city simply name the river after “Perfume” (Vietnamese: Huong) to describe the aromatic smell of the river.
III. Facts about the Perfume river
Those who have been to Hue city know that the Perfume river splits the city into two parts, the Northern and the Southern part. Nevertheless, the river stretches further, even to the ocean. The Perfume river has a length of 80 kilometers.
The Perfume river has two main creeks, originating from the Truong Son mountain. The “Ta Trach” creek starts from Dong Dai, running through 55 small and big waterfalls to Bang Lang fork. The other creek is known as “Huu Trach” running through 14 waterfalls and joined the Ta Trach creek at the fork.
The Perfume River runs through Hue city and various villages and then reaches its final destination, which is the ocean. Even though it is a faithful friend of Hue’s people, the river can sometimes turn her back on her friends during the flood season, causing a lot of damage to those who live close to the river. The water of the river is blue all year round but turns brown during the flood season.
There are various famous destinations that can be seen along the river bank. One cannot miss the Trang Tien Bridge that crosses the river, especially during the night time. Metaphorically, the river is a mirror that reflects the colorful lights of Trang Tien Bridge at night. This is also the best time to take a dragon boat along the river. The river also runs alongside Vy Da garden which is famous for its green nature. The most famous place that oversees the river is Thien Mu pagoda (or also known as Linh Mu pagoda). You can have a breathtaking bird-eye view of the river, forests and mountains standing at the pagoda. The Perfume river then continues to run along the Nguyet Bieu village and then to Tu Duc Tomb, where one of the most famous kings of the Nguyen Dynasty rests in peace amongst the high mountains and thick forests.
IV. Tour along the Perfume river
Going on the dragon boat along the river is what those who visit Hue love to do. Listening to “Ca Huế” (Hue songs) is a must-do thing. “Ca Huế” is a form of classical Vietnamese music of central Vietnam, especially Hue city. You will see the singer sings solo, accompanying himself/herself with wooden clappers or small teacups. You will also see 5 instruments being played before and between the solos, which is also known as “ngũ tuyệt” in Vietnamese. There’s nothing better than appreciating the beauty of the river and the city while listening to ‘Ca Huế” and enjoying the fresh and aromatic water and air.
It is possible to book your tickets on your arrival. Ticket for a trip on the dragon boat costs between $6-10. You can book the ticket at hotels, travel agents or even on the river.
Don’t forget to bring the perfume back to your home every time you visit Hue!
