In an important development for tourism in Vietnam, the National Assembly has granted approval to a government proposal that extends the validity of e-visas for tourists from 30 days to 90 days, while also allowing multiple entries. The legislative body successfully passed the required amendments to the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam, with an overwhelming majority of 470 out of 475 members voting in favor of the extension.

This extension brings great news for nationals from several western European countries, Japan, and South Korea, which are among Vietnam’s top tourism markets. These individuals are now eligible to visit Vietnam without a visa for a period of up to 15 days.

The approval of multiple-entry visas by lawmakers is seen as a measure that will significantly reduce administrative burdens, as well as save both time and money for visitors. By offering the option of multiple entries, Vietnam aims to enhance its appeal as a tourist destination.

Le Tan Toi, the head of the National Assembly Committee for Defense and Security, expressed the committee’s rationale behind approving the three-month e-visa extension. He stated that this extension would fulfill the demand of foreign visitors who wish to stay longer in Vietnam to explore potential investment opportunities.

Currently, Vietnam provides e-visas to citizens of 80 countries and territories, and it waives visa requirements for nationals of 25 countries, typically granting stays of 15 to 30 days. This policy was perceived as being less generous compared to other countries in the region. However, with the recent extension, Vietnam is now offering a more attractive and accommodating e-visa system.

In the first five months of this year, Vietnam welcomed 4.6 million foreign visitors, surpassing half of the annual target of eight million. Despite this achievement, the figures still only amount to 63% of pre-pandemic levels. The extension of e-visa validity is expected to contribute to the recovery and growth of Vietnam’s tourism industry, attracting more international travelers and stimulating the country’s economy.
