The Covid-19 vaccine production effort has initially been evaluated as promising. Some ASEAN countries have begun signing contracts with pharmaceutical companies to order vaccines. Thailand and the Philippines are the two newest countries in ASEAN last week signed an agreement to order vaccines produced by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in cooperation with Oxford University.

Other ASEAN countries have also taken similar steps, in addition to collaborating on research to produce vaccines themselves. On the determinant of each country in which vaccine to choose, many believe safety and efficacy will be the top considerations, but the cost cannot be ignored. And geopolitical reasons are also a factor that cannot be ignored. South China Morning Post quoted Leong Hoe Nam, an infectious diseases expert in Singapore, pointing out: “If you look at the Philippines and Malaysia, you see there is a strong patronage of China.”

Vietnam
Vietnam has begun research and development efforts for the Covid-19 vaccine for several months. The latest information by Tuoi Tre newspaper said that by the beginning of December at the latest, the vaccine was developed by Nanogen Company using recombinant protein technology will be injected for human testing in phase 1. The Military Medical Academy will plan to launch a trial of Covid-19 vaccination on volunteers.
Health officials said the Covid-19 vaccine “made in Vietnam” was born to meet domestic needs, be autonomous, as a foundation for the development of vaccines against other coronavirus strains in the future.

However, the ability of Vietnam’s vaccine to be produced early as well as insufficient doses for large-scale vaccination is very low. Therefore, the external supply is still the main source.

At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held on October 15, spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang confirmed that Vietnam had ordered Sputnik V vaccine from Russia and British vaccine.

As of November 30, Vietnam has detected one local transmission case in Ho Chi Minh City ending a streak of nearly three months. The patient contracted the virus from a flight attendant that had been quarantined. On the next day, The Prime minister of Vietnam banned all commerce flights from foreign countries to this country.  More than 100,000 students in Ho Chi Minh City must move to e-learning.  Until 4th December, Vietnam’s Ministry of Health confirmed a total of 1,361 cases of COVID-19, 1209 of the affected patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals. Vietnam has also recorded 35 deaths due to pandemic.

In October, Thailand’s Ministry of Health, Siam Bioscience Company, and SCG business group also signed a letter of intent with AstraZeneca. The agreement to allow Siam Bioscience to produce the vaccine (AZD1222) at its factory, is scheduled for mid-next year. If the plans go smoothly, Thailand will become the first country in Southeast Asia to produce the vaccine, says Siam Bioscience. So far, on December 3, Thailand has 4039 people infected (increase 13 new cases), 3832 people recovered, and 60 deaths.

Philippines

The Philippines is also currently seeking to order 20-50 million doses from Chinese company Sinovac and US company Pfizer among other sources.

The Philippine government says it is targeting about 60 million Filipinos to be vaccinated with Covid-19 in about two years from 2021. The plan, at a cost of more than 73 billion pesos ($ 1.4 billion), aims to develops immunity in the majority of the population.

The Philippines suffered heavy losses during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the latest updated data showing that more than 428,000 people were infected and 8,333 died.

However, delivery times currently depend on whether the Pfizer vaccine is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Malaysian Drug Administration.

In addition, Malaysia will conduct the first test of the Covid-19 vaccine in December, as part of the agreement between the government and China. This will be phase III testing of a vaccine developed by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Medicine.

Currently, Malaysia has a total of 63,176 infected people, of which 51,314 have been cured. The death toll was 354.
