Weather in Vietnam

The weather in Vietnam can be split by its region. From North to South, the climatic experiences changes throughout the year and it is good to be prepared with this information to build the perfect trip. In Hanoi capital and the Northern region, November to April are particularly cooler and dry months whereas from May to October the weather is hot and humid with high rainfall.

And if you are planning to visit the mountainous regions, be aware that December and January can be particularly cold and with even chances of snow in Sapa area.

In the central area of Vietnam, the temperature can get very hot and dry between January and August while the as high level of rainfall can drop from September to November.

Southern Vietnam is the generally dry and hot from November to April and gets wet between May and October with the highest rainfall in the months of June to August.

Weather in Cambodia

There are four annual seasons: cool and dry between November and February; hot and dry between March and May; hot and wet between June and August; and cool and wet between September and early November.

The best time to visit is the cool season when the weather usually benefits from a pleasant dry heat and the countryside is still green from the rains. As February turns into March, the heat begins to build until April and May, when it can be quite oppressive and uncomfortable.

In May and June, the rains come and bring a measure of relief. It rarely rains all day, and mostly it will rain for an hour or two in the afternoon or evening. By early September, the heat begins to dissipate and the evenings are cooler.

Through October, the frequency of the showers slows and the humidity starts to lower. Although the wet season is low season for tourism throughout most of the region, visiting at that time does have its advantages. It is when the Angkor complex is at its most beautiful, the vegetation is lush, and the crowds are relatively thin.

Weather in Laos

While most of the year is hot and humid,  Laos enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The rainy season is from the beginning of May to the end of September, and the dry season is from October through April. The yearly average temperature is about 28 degrees Celsius, rising to a high of 38 degrees Celsius during April and May.

In Vientiane a low temperature of 19 degrees Celsius is to be expected during January. In mountainous areas, however, temperatures drop to as low as 14-15 degrees Celsius during the winter months, and during cold nights, can easily reach the freezing point. The average precipitation is highest in Southern Laos, where the Annamite Mountains receive over 3,000 mm annually. In Vientiane rainfall is about 1,500-2,000 mm, and in the Northern provinces only 1,000-1,500 mm.

The best time to visit Vietnam is from September to April. From September to November, the temperature is pretty cool, the sky is clear from the North to the South Vietnam. From the end of December to February, the weather is getting colder and colder in the North, which makes it wonderful to discover the beautiful hill tribes and mountain in the Far North. The best time to visit Cambodia is the dry season which lasts from November to March. Dry season features clear sky, sunshine, and high visibility. The roads are at the best condition, making traveling and transiting easier than ever.

Halong Bay

Temple of Preah Vihear

Situated on the edge of Dângrêk Mountains in Preah Vihear, this is an ancient temple that is dedicated to Shiva – a Hinduism deity. Dating back to the 9th century, the Temple of Preah Vihear contains a series of sanctuaries that are connected by a system of staircases and pavements.

This site is still well preserved after centuries of historical ups and downs and weather changes, thus proving the extraordinary architectural quality. Additionally, it is also a sculptural masterpiece with incredible stone carving technique.

Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk, Archaeological Site of Ancient Ishanapura

Among the three sites, this archaeological site is the earliest to appear in Cambodia. It was the capital of the Chenla Kingdom, which was at its heyday between the 7th and 9th century. This temple zone consists of more than 100 temples, many of which possess the typical specimens of Southeast Asia culture. The architecture and artistic design of this temple zone is the foundation of the Khmer style in the later centuries.

Top local festivals to discover the culture of Laos

Laos has many fascinating festivals, most of them steeped in Buddhism. Book hotels well in advance if you're planning on visiting during festival time, particularly in the big cities.

• Bun Bang Fai: The Rocket Festival is held in the middle of May. Rockets are fired and prayers are said in the paddy fields to bring rain in time for the planting of the rice seedlings.
• Bun Khao Padab Din: This special rice ceremony takes place in August; the exact date depends on the harvest schedule. People make offerings at temples to keep alive the memory of spirits who have no relatives.
• Bun Khao Salak: This rice ceremony whose date also depends on the harvest schedule happens in September. For this one, people visit temples to make offerings for their ancestors. Boat races are held on the Mekong, especially in Luang Prabang and Khammuan Province.
• Bun Ok Pansa: The day of the full moon in October marks the end of Buddhist Lent, and is celebrated with donations to local temples. Candlelight processions are held, and colorful floats are set adrift on the Mekong River. The following day, boat races are held in Vientiane, Savannakhet, and Pakse.
• Bun Pimai: Lao New Year takes place from April 13 to 15. At this water festival similar to Thailand's Songkran, all the important Buddha images are cleaned with scented water (and the public gets wet in the bargain). The festivities are particularly lively in Luang Prabang, where the holiday is celebrated for nearly a week.
• Bun Visakhabucha (Buddha Day): On the day of the full moon in May, candlelight processions are held in temples to mark the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha.
• That Ing Hang Festival: This takes place in Savannakhet in December, and lasts several days on the grounds of the ancient Wat That Inhang, just outside the city. Events include sports contests, performances of traditional Lao music and dance, and a spectacular drumming competition.
• That Luang Festival: This weeklong event in Vientiane in November ends with a grand fireworks display. Hundreds of monks gather to accept alms. The festival runs concurrently with an international trade fair showcasing the products of Laos and other countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
• Wat Phu Festival: Also known as Makhabucha Day, this festival is held during the day of the first full moon in February at Wat Phu, near Champasak. Elephant races, buffalo fights, cockfights, and traditional Lao music-and-dance performances make for a very full schedule.

One has to wrap the pancake in a leaf of rice and mix herbs and spices to your liking, making a roll that is then dipped in soy or fish sauce.
• Bún bò Huế: A popular Vietnamese soup that contains vermicelli of rice (bún) and beef (bò). This dish is much admired for its balance of spicy, sour, salty and sweet flavors and the predominant flavor is that of lemongrass. In comparison with phở or bun riêu, the noodles are thicker and more cylindrical. It includes thin slices of marinated and boiled beef, pieces of oxtail and pork knuckles. You can also include cubes of pig blood. Bun bò is served with lime wedges, coriander sprigs, chopped green onions, raw sliced onions, chili sauce, banana blossom, red cabbage, mint, basil, goat, and Vietnamese cilantro.
• Banh Mì: Legacy of the French it is the national baguette and it is very, very tasty. You can order it with pork, chicken, cow or also with paté or egg. Ideal for a snack or breakfast.

Must-try dishes in Cambodia?

• Amok – Arguably the most well known Cambodian dish. A coconut milk curried dish less spicy than those found in Thailand. Amok is usually made with chicken, fish, or shrimp, plus some vegetables. It is sometimes served in a hollowed-out coconut with rice on the side.
• K’tieu (Kuytheav) – A noodle soup generally served for breakfast. It can be made with pork, beef or seafood. Flavorings are added to the customers taste in the form of lime juice, chili powder, sugar and fish sauce.
• Somlah Machou Khmae – A sweet and sour soup made with pineapple, tomatoes, and fish.
• Bai Sarch Ch’rouk – Another breakfast staple. Rice (bai) with pork meat (sarch chrouk) often barbequed. Very tasty and served with pickled vegetables.
• Saik Ch’rouk Cha Kn’yei – Pork fried with ginger. Ginger is commonly used as a vegetable. This tasty dish is available just about everywhere.
• Lok lak – Chopped up beefsteak cooked quickly. Probably a holdover from the days of French colonization. Served with a simple dipping sauce made from lime juice and black pepper, lettuce, onion, and often with chips.
• Mi / Bai Chaa – Fried noodles or rice. Never particularly inspiring, but a good traveler’s staple.
• Trey Ch’ien Chou ‘Ayme – Trey (fish) fried with a sweet chili sauce and vegetables. Chou ‘ayme is the phrase for “sweet and sour”.
• K’dam – Crab. Kampot in the south is famous for its crab cooked in locally sourced black pepper. Don’t forget Khmer desserts – Pong Aime (sweets). These are available from stalls in most Khmer towns and can be excellent. Choose from a variety of sweetmeats and have them served with ice, condensed milk, and sugar water. A must try is the Tuk-a-loc, a blended drink of fruits, raw egg, sweetened condensed milk, and ice.

• Mok Pa: Mok Pa is a special food of Luang Prabang that is appreciated by many visitors. This food was made of fish, herbs and vegetables. Mok Pa is served mostly in a banana leaf to bring the sense of nature to enjoy. Insect Protein: Eating food from insects such as caterpillars, crickets, grasshoppers, silkworm pupae, ant egg may make some tourists feel disgusted but it also makes many travelers feel excited by its uniqueness. Things to pack to Vietnam

Light, comfortable, easy to launder clothing is recommended. Winter months in Hanoi and rainy season in the central region can get cool so a sweater or light jacket will come in handy. Good walking shoes and sandals that can be easily removed are recommended especially when visiting temples and people’s homes.

Ensure you have suitable clothing packed for visiting temples and pagodas that you can cover up with. E.g. Shirts and long pants. No dresses, shorts, singlets, string tops or revealing clothing should be worn in temples and pagodas.

Vietnam is generally a casual country by western standards although people do like to dress in their Sunday best whenever the opportunity arises therefore simple and casual clothes are appropriate for almost any occasion.

The year-round heat and humidity in the south, especially Ho Chi Min City makes lightweight quick-dry clothing the most appropriate. The north and central highlands get cool enough for sweaters or light jackets for much of the year but the northern highlands will require cold weather clothes in the winter.

If you are not participating in any trekking tours, sandals and lightweight shoes are sufficient. If trekking is included in your itinerary, you will need trekking boots.

Things to pack to Cambodia

Pack lots of light, breathable clothing options. Make sure you are bringing comfortable footwear as you’ll spend a lot of time walking. Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses and even an umbrella once you are in the temples and the sun really heats you. And for the temples as well, be mindful that shoulders must be covered as well as your knees.

Things to pack to Laos

Clothing during the hot season, January to April, bring light clothes in cotton and linen, sunglasses and a hat all year long. Sunscreen and bug repellant is also recommended.

From November to December, the cold season, it is a good idea to bring warm clothing such as sweaters and jackets for the morning and evening, and even more so if you are visiting the mountainous regions of the North.

From May to October, during the rainy season, it is best to have waterproof clothing. It is best to wear easily removable shoes or sandals when visiting the temples.

When visiting temples and people’s homes, if you sit down, avoid pointing your feet forward as this is considered offensive behaviour and try to sit in a kneeling position.
