The Huong river runs through a forest that carries the flagrant odor of herbs, therefore the river is said to be sweet-scented. People in the city simply name the river after “Perfume” (Vietnamese: Huong) to describe the aromatic smell of the river.

The Perfume river runs through Hue city and various villages and then reaches its final destination, which is the ocean. Even though it is a faithful friend of Hue’s people, the river can sometimes turn her back on her friends during the flood season, causing a lot of damage to those who live close to the river. The water of the river is blue all year round but turns brown during the flood season.

There are various famous destinations that can be seen along the river bank. One cannot miss the Trang Tien Bridge that crosses the river, especially during the night time. Metaphorically, the river is a mirror that reflects the colorful lights of Trang Tien Bridge at night. This is also the best time to take a dragon boat along the river. The river also runs alongside Vy Da garden which is famous for its green nature. The most famous place that oversees the river is Thien Mu pagoda (or also known as Linh Mu pagoda). You can have a breathtaking bird-eye view of the river, forests and mountains standing at the pagoda. The Perfume river then continues to run along the Nguyet Bieu village and then to Tu Duc Tomb, where one of the most famous kings of the Nguyen Dynasty rests in peace amongst the high mountains and thick forests.

Going on the dragon boat along the river is what those who visit Hue love to do. Listening to “Ca Huế” (Hue songs) is a must-do thing. “Ca Huế” is a form of classical Vietnamese music of central Vietnam, especially Hue city. You will see the singer sings solo, accompanying himself/herself with wooden clappers or small teacups. You will also see 5 instruments being played before and between the solos, which is also known as “ngũ tuyệt” in Vietnamese. There’s nothing better than appreciating the beauty of the river and the city while listening to ‘Ca Huế” and enjoying the fresh and aromatic water and air.
