Tour Plan

DAY 1: HANOI – LAI CHAU – A DELIGHTFUL ESCAPE FROM CITY

After breakfast, depart from Hanoi and begin your journey toward Lai Chau, traveling along one of Northern Vietnam’s most scenic routes. Pass through the picturesque O Quy Ho Pass, one of the four great mountain passes of Vietnam, offering spectacular views of rolling mountains and deep valleys.

Continue your drive through Lai Chau, where endless rice terraces and tea plantations stretch along the hillsides. Arrive in Lai Chau in the afternoon. After spending time enjoying the view and soaking in the serene mountain atmosphere, transfer to your accommodation in Lai Chau for a restful evening.

Overnight in Lai Chau.

Transfer to Si Thau Chai Village and Tac Tinh Waterfall, where the serene atmosphere instantly brings a sense of comfort and lightness. This is the perfect place to seek peace—far removed from the fatigue and noise of the city—while discovering unique local customs and cultural traditions. Si Thau Chai Village lies halfway up the Pu Ta Leng Mountain range, about 6 km from Tam Duong Town in Tam Duong District, Lai Châu Province. Blessed with beautiful natural surroundings, the village is framed by gently sloping, expansive terraced fields stretching from the mountainsides down to the valley—a distinctive architectural and agricultural hallmark of the Dao ethnic community. Here, you can observe and learn how local families construct their traditional houses. Continue to Tac Tinh Waterfall, a picturesque site deeply connected to the legend of a local couple’s love story, adding a touch of romance and mystery to the natural beauty, transfer back to your hotel.

Overnight in Lai Chau.

Transfer to Lao Chai Village, where you will be welcomed by traditional architectural-style houses, stone-paved pathways, and the distinctive cultural identity of the H’Mông people—hallmarks of this charming village in the northern mountainous province of Lai Châu. Here, you will have the chance to gain a unique hands-on experience as you learn about local culture, observe daily life, and try your hand at traditional batik techniques.

Lao Chai is especially renowned for its breathtaking rice terraces, cascading gracefully down the hillsides like a vibrant green tapestry. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning terraced landscapes, and the warm hospitality of its people, this beautiful village has become a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic and immersive rural Vietnam experience.

Overnight in Lai Chau.

After breakfast, depart from Lai Chau and begin your journey toward Mu Cang Chai, traveling along one of Northern Vietnam’s most scenic routes.

Continue your drive through Tam Duong and Than Uyen, where endless rice terraces and tea plantations stretch along the hillsides. Stop along the way for photo opportunities and to visit small ethnic minority villages — home to the Thai and H’Mong people — where traditional stilt houses and colorful handmade textiles reflect centuries of cultural heritage.

Arrive in Mu Cang Chai in the afternoon, embark on a short drive to Mong Ngua Hill, one of the most stunning viewpoints in Mu Cang Chai. From this vantage point, you can take in a breathtaking panorama of the terraced rice fields stretching endlessly across the valleys and mountain slopes. The name “Mong Ngua”, meaning “Horse’s Hoof Hill”, comes from its distinctive curved shape that resembles a horse’s hoof — a unique natural formation carved over time by both nature and human hands.

As you stand at the top, the landscape unfolds like a living painting — layers of rice terraces shimmering in shades of green or gold depending on the season. The gentle breeze carries the scent of earth and rice, while the distant sound of farmers working in the fields adds to the authenticity of the moment. This is one of the best places to capture unforgettable photos and truly appreciate the harmony between people and nature that defines Mu Cang Chai. After spending time enjoying the view and soaking in the serene mountain atmosphere, return to your accommodation in Mu Cang Chai for a restful evening.

Overnight in Mu Cang Chai.

After breakfast, embark on a full-day exploration of Mu Cang Chai, a destination where the artistry of nature and human ingenuity converge in breathtaking harmony.

Begin your morning with a leisurely trek through La Pan Tan and De Xu Phinh villages, where the terraced fields unfold in sweeping patterns that seem to merge sky and earth. Along the trail, encounter local farmers tending their crops using traditional tools and age-old techniques passed down through generations. The H’Mong people, the main ethnic group here, are known for their deep respect for the land and their remarkable ability to cultivate these steep slopes, transforming rugged mountains into fertile fields through sheer determination and skill. As you wander through the villages, you’ll witness scenes of authentic rural life — children playing by the paths, women weaving or dyeing fabric in front of their homes, and the faint scent of woodsmoke rising from kitchen fires. The vibrant attire of the H’Mong women, adorned with intricate embroidery and silver jewelry, stands in striking contrast against the emerald-green backdrop of the terraces. Stop for a simple yet flavorful local lunch, made from fresh ingredients sourced from the surrounding fields. Those who wish to immerse deeper in the local culture may join a H’Mong family to prepare traditional dishes, sharing stories, laughter, and the warmth of true hospitality. This experience offers a rare glimpse into the rhythms of daily life in Vietnam’s northern highlands.

In the afternoon, try to discover the ancient art of batik making — an intricate craft that embodies the soul of their culture. Using molten beeswax and natural indigo dye, artisans skillfully draw delicate patterns on fabric, each motif symbolizing blessings, fertility, or harmony with nature. The process requires patience and precision, and every finished piece is a testament to both artistic talent and cultural pride. Return to your lodge or homestay for dinner and relaxation, surrounded by the serene beauty of the highlands.

Overnight in Mu Cang Chai.

After breakfast, take some time to explore the surrounding area, including the local rice paddies and traditional houses. Then visit Long Coc Tea Hills in Phu Tho province before driving back to Hanoi. Long Coc Tea Hills is renowned for its rolling green hills. The misty mornings create Located a dreamy, picturesque landscape, perfect for photography. Visitors can walk through the tea plantations, and learn about traditional tea cultivation. With its fresh air and serene beauty, Long Coc offers a peaceful retreat into nature.
