Con Dao is a sixteen-island archipelago in southeast Vietnam. It is famed for its crystal clear blue-green waters, soft golden sand beaches, lush mangrove forests, and beautiful coral reefs. Six Senses Con Dao is nestled within a beautiful secluded bay 8km from Co Ong airport. The resort has a magnificent beach, a beguiling 1.5km strip of golden sand with sloping dunes leading to turquoise waters, and the dramatic Elephant Head Mountain as a backdrop. Con Dao was recognized as a nature reserve in 1984 and became a national park in 1993. The park is the most important egg-laying area in Vietnam for sea turtles, as well as being home to rare dugong, dolphins, and varieties of orchids found nowhere else in the country.

1. Where Is Con Dao?

Con Dao Islands, also known as Con Dao National park, is an archipelago of 16 mostly uninhabited islets just off the southern coast of Vietnam, each of which offers expansive beaches shaded with evergreen trees. Great for savvy travelers looking to escape bustling city life, the main island also boasts miles of coastal roads, hiking trails and a wide range of outdoor activities. 

 

The best time to visit Con Dao Islands is during the dry season (November to February), but if you’re looking to see turtles nesting on Hon Bay Canh Island, visit between June and September. February till July is ideal for diving excursions as the waters around Con Dao have visibility averaging between 20 and 30 metres.

 

Con Dao is ringed with lovely beaches, coral reefs, and scenic bays and remains partially covered in thick forests. Therefore, it’s an ideal place for
diving, snorkeling and relaxing on beaches. Con Dao prison has also been known under the name “The hell on earth”, was builtin late 19th century by French to imprison tens thousands of revolutionary through over a hundred years. The Con Dao National Park should also be must-see.

Bay Canh Islet

Bay Canh Hon is located in the East of Con Dao, with an area of 683ha, including two parts of the island connected by sand bars in the middle called Big Sand Beach. This is also one of the 14 spawning grounds of Con Dao sea turtle and is the beach with the highest number of turtles to lay eggs in Con Dao. During the breeding season (from April to September every year), at least 1-2 individuals night, many nights from 20-30 female mother turtles to the nest and lay eggs.

Con Dao National Park

Con Dao National Park covers an area of nearly 6,000 hectares of land and 14,000 hectares of water area. The association of coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves has created a favorable environment for breeding, breeding and preserving marine species.

Currently, Con Dao is the most abundant sea turtle area in Vietnam, with two common species being tortoiseshell and crowded. There are 17 sand beaches recorded as turtle breeding grounds, of which up to 4 beaches are recorded as having 1,000 mother turtles giving birth every year.

Con Dao Island

Con Dao prison is considered a "hell on earth" during the war against France and the United States. This prison system was built by the French to hold prisoners who were particularly dangerous to the French colonial regime such as political prisoners, death row inmates ... In the French colonial period, they held communist figures and patriots who opposed the colonial government and were later used by the Americans to imprison prisoners in the war against the US.

Dam Tre Bay

Located in the north of Con Son Island and 3 km from Con Dao airport. This is an airtight bay, deep inland, a harmonious combination between the sea and the surrounding mountains, giving the bay many poetic, mysterious landscapes, charming scenery and fresh environment.

Nui Mot Temple

Nui Mot Pagoda (Van Son Tu) is located on Nui Mot, which was built in 1964. Over a period of degradation, the pagoda was started to be embellished on August 13, 2010, and inaugurated on December 4,2011. Located on a mountain, the pagoda has sweeping views of the sea, overlooking the whole town of Con Dao and Con Son bay, An Hai lake.

Oyster porridge (Chao Hau)

Her breast screws (Oc Vu Nang)

Moon crab (Cua Mat Trang)

Pineapple sauce (Mam Nhum)

Red grouper (Ca Mu Do)

Red grouper is one of Con Dao's specialties not to be missed. Another name is grouper and is the most popular fish among the beaches in Con Dao with tough and sweet aromatic meat, often processed into very attractive sauces, grilled and salads.

 

Almond seed jam ( Mut Hat Bang)

Almond seed jam is a famous specialty of Con Dao. The flavor of jam is often crunchy, fleshy, aromatic and very interesting, a special gift bearing the impression of this place.

Oyster sauce (Mam Hau)

If the fish sauce dishes are familiar to visitors when coming to the seas, the oyster sauce dish will be a very unique dish. This is a familiar dish in the daily meals of the islanders. Oysters often live clinging to coastal cliffs, fishermen can only go to catch oysters at low tide. Oysters are peeled and peeled, washed then stirred with salt, paprika with other spices and put in bottles. After about 20 to 25 days, the oyster sauce will change color, the meat will float and the water that settles to the bottom will be bright red to be eaten.
