Discover Our
Hoi An Tours

In this UNESCO-designated river town, you can tour centuries-old merchant houses, and visit busy silk and fish markets. Hoi An is an ancient port town on the Thu Bon River 30 km south of Da Nang. Known as Faifo to early Western traders, it was one of Southeast Asia’s major international ports during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Hoi An was an important port of call for Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and other trading vessels. Today, parts of Hoi An look exactly as they did a century and a half ago, and it still preserves hundreds of houses built of precious wood in a very original style of architecture. There is a Japanese quarter linked with a Chinese neighborhood by a covered bridge, which was constructed in 1593 by the Japanese community in Hoi An. This bridge reflects the Japanese preference for understatement and is still in its original style. The Chinese community in Hoi An is fond of many temples and assembly halls, which are worth visiting again and again.

Travel Guide

1. Where is Hoi An?

Hoi An is a small town in Quang Nam Province, which is only 50 km to the south of Da Nang – the city of the worldwide famous “Golden Bridge”. It is a typical Central countryside where the indigenous local live harmonizingly with nature. Even when the pace of life is increasingly fast these days, Hoi An still holds a peaceful and tranquil vibe that everyone would love to immerse in.
Thanks to its proximity to Thu Bon River and the sea, this little coastal town used to be a major trading port of Asia from the 15th to the 19th century. Traders from different parts of the world (China, Japan, France, Spain, for example) gathered there to exchange goods and do business. Hoi An, hence, represents the convergence of Eastern and Western culture. This cluster is clearly demonstrated in Hoi An architecture, customs, and cuisine.
UNESCO designated Hoi An as a World Heritage Site in 1999 to value its culture. Together with the neighbors Da Nang and Hue, the town is always voted as a must-stop place in Central Vietnam tours.

Generally, it is warm all year round in Hoi An. Similar to other places to the south of Bach Ma Mountain Range, there is almost no winter in this town. The hottest months are reported to be between June and August when the temperature could reach 38℃.
Rather than temperature, Hoi An weather is divided into two main seasons based on the rainfall: the dry season from March to September and the wet season for the rest period of time.
From October to February, the sea is rough and it starts to rain non-stop. Consequently, the town of Hoi An is prone to flooding then. If you are about to plan Hoi An tours at this time, it is better to check the weather carefully before going, as when the streets are flooded, many destinations, as well as shops and restaurants, would shut their doors.
In contrast, between March and September, the weather is quite pleasant. Apart from the peak days when the temperature goes up high, Hoi An weather tends to be very mild. There are lots of sunshine and low humidity, also.
Considering both the temperature and rainfall, between February and early May is considered the best time to take private Hoi An tours.

As it is quite close to Da Nang, most travelers choose to combine these two destinations during their Vietnam trips. In other words, visitors would transit to Hoi An after arriving in Danang.
From Da Nang, there are three main ways to get to Hoi An: private car, public bus, and motorbike. It takes roughly 1 hour to transit between them.

Travel to Hoi An by air

The major port of air entry for Hoi An is Da Nang International Airport (DAD). There are daily flights from Hanoi and Hochiminh City and without delay, it is one-hour flight. From the airport, it takes about 45 minutes by car to Hoi An center.

Travel to Hoi An by private car

If you are going on a leisure trip and do not want to put so much time and effort in finding transportation, a private car is for you. You can request a private car with a tour operator to pick you up from Da Nang Airport or hotel. In this case, you will get a private space and don’t need to share it with any strangers. The car is exceptionally comfortable to sit in, also.

Travel to Hoi An by public bus

Public bus is a popular choice for people with a limited budget. There are buses coming from Da Nang to Hoi An Ancient Town and back within the day, and it costs only some dollars. However, as it is a public means of transportation, you will need to share spaces with strangers all the way long. And even though Da Nang is famous for its security, robbery and theft are unavoidable.

Travel to Hoi An by motorbike

Riding the motorbike would be a fascinating experience for adventurous travelers when taking Hoi An tours from Danang. You will be able to witness the landscapes along the way while breathing the fresh air of the countryside. However, this could be a nightmare to some people, as the traffic rules are Vietnam is quite loose and the locals tend to drive freely.

The length of a Hoi An tour depends on your purpose of traveling. It might be a day trip only or might last for days or weeks.
If Hoi An is only one of the destinations in your short Central Vietnam tour, then your trip might be a Hoi An 1 day tour. Many travelers come here just to visit the ancient town and enjoy the food, then coming back for a night stay in Danang or transiting to other destinations. However, it is quite rough a tour, as there would not be enough time for you to explore the beauty of the town thoroughly.
For those whose time is more flexible, it is better to spend more days in this beautiful town. Hoi An has more to offer than just an old quarter. You can enjoy your leisure time at a luxury beach resort or take a Hoi An bike tour to cycle around and feel the tranquil vibe of the countryside. A day should also be spent on a trip to Cham Island, where visitors can dive into the cool sea to watch the gorgeous coral reefs

Most people tend to combine Hoi An tours with a visit to the adjacent destinations like Da Nang, Hue, and My Son.

Da Nang - One of the Most Worth-living Cities in the World

Da Nang is the familiar name that always accompanies Hoi An in Vietnam tour itineraries. The city is home to spectacular landscapes and numerous amusement parks.
The city possesses exquisite natural settings with the soaring Truong Son Mountain Range in the west and stunning beaches in the east. Tourists love to take a motorbike tour over Hai Van Pass to get a panoramic view of the mountain and the far-off ocean or jump into the water of the stunning beaches to cool down the summer heat.
Another must-see place in Da Nang is Ba Na Hills – a huge amusement complex on the top of the western mountain. Thanks to its pleasant climate and breath-taking scenery, it is an ideal destination for an off-the-beaten-track trip. Notably, it is home to Golden Bridge – the bridge raised by Buddha hands that go viral on the internet these days.

Hue - The Historical & Cultural Heritage of Vietnam

Around 100 km to the North of Hoi An locates Hue – a peaceful city with royal vibes. The city used to be the capital of ancient Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty – the last feudal dynasty of this country. The complex of Hue royal construction including the Forbidden City, palaces, royal tombs, and temples bear important historical and cultural values, not just to Vietnam only but to the whole of Asia. It is the home to Vietnamese Royal Court Music – a UNESCO World Intangible Heritage, also.
Unlike other big cities where life has become more and more bustling, Hue still remains its slow-paced and tranquil vibe. If you are looking for some nostalgic and quiet vibes, Hue is definitely a must-stop place.

My Son Sanctuary -  The Partially Ruined Hindu Temples in Vietnam

My Son Sanctuary is a heritage near Hoi An that culture lovers should never miss. It is the ruins of the once-glorious Champa Kingdom, which was at its heyday between the 4th and the 13th centuries. This site consists of several tower temples – the remains of Champa Culture, which has its root from Indian Hinduism.
Not only is the complex religiously significant, but it is also a vivid picture that demonstrates the great civilization in My Son in the past. The architectural and sculptural techniques of the ancient Champa people did go beyond the times and represent an important evolutional phase of Southeast Asian cultures.

Small as it might be, Hoi An has a lot of things to offer. There are several fascinating destinations to fit different tastes of travelers. Below are the 4 best tourist attractions in Hoi An that you should visit at least once in your life.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Absolutely, Hoi An Tours will never be complete without a trip around the ancient town – its most famous touristic spots. Hoi An Ancient Town is the evidence of the once-prosperous trading port with spectacular ancient buildings and distinctive culture. As people from different parts of the world came there to do business, they brought along their cultures. The customs and norms of Hoi An people nowadays are the cluster of all these cultures. You can feel this convergence in the buildings and cuisine of this land.
It is so memorable an experience to wander along the streets inside the town to visit the hundred-year-old houses and halls, watch the beautiful lanterns, and sample appetizing dishes.

Cham Island

Cu Lao Cham (Cham Islands) is an archipelago consisting of 8 small islands on Hoi An sea. It is a World Biosphere Reserve, which is home to a rich bio-ecological system.
Cham Island is a great place for scuba diving and snorkeling in Hoi An with transparent blue seawater and exceptionally majestic marine life. There are also Colgate-while beaches for swimming and sunbathing.
During Hoi An Island trip, you can also pay a visit to the fishing villages to get an exposure to the local life or cycle around the island to enjoy the fresh atmosphere there.

Mangrove Palm Forest

The mangrove palm forest is nestled in the convergence of Truong Giang and Thu Bon Rivers, which is only about 3 km from the old town. The natural scenery here is extraordinary, which could easily capture your hearts at the very first look.
The highlight of a forest expedition is Hoi An basket boat tour. You will be on this unique boat to glide along the forest. Visitors could take a cycling tour along the shaded paths through the forest to breathe the fresh air and get some beautiful handicrafts made from palm leaves, also.

Tra Que Village

Located around 3 km to the Northeast of Hoi An Ancient Town, Tra Que Village is a wonderful place for a bicycle or cooking tour. This 300-year-old village is the main source of veggies for Hoi An and adjacent areas.
Hoi An tours to Tra Que will take you away from the bustling of the city and allow you to immerse in the quietness of the countryside. The village is covered with the evergreen of vegetables and trees, which is so good a scenery that you can’t help falling in love. Veggies and herbs from Tra Que are exceptionally fresh and clean, contributing largely to the heaven-like flavor of Hoi An cuisine.
Visitors can cycle around the village, try to water the veggies, or participate in a cooking class here.

My Son Holy Land

If Angkor Wat is the symbol of the once-glorious Angkor Kingdom in Cambodia, My Son Holy Land, or My Son Sanctuary, is the evidence that reminds people of Champa Kingdom, which ruled the southern part of Vietnam and parts of Laos and Cambodia between the 4th and 13th century. First looking at the ruins inside the Holy Land, you might feel some similarity to the temples in Angkor Wat, simply because Champa culture is Hinduism-based.
Not only is the sanctuary historically and culturally significant, but My Son Holy Land also displayed the superb arts of Champa people. The technique to form the temples and shrines inside this heritage is still a mystery that has no answer. You will be left in awe with the complicated and unique architecture of the site when traveling there.

Hoi An Central Market

Visitors can buy pretty much buy everything from A to Z and the price they pay depends on their negotiation skills. An unmissable shopping experience.

Japanese Covered Bridge

One of Vietnam’s most iconic attractions, Hoi An’s Japanese Covered Bridge dates back to the 16th century and is a beautiful historical piece symbolized with a Japanese style pagoda.

Hoi An Riverside

From the early 16th to the 18th century, Hoi An attracted international traders because of its location on the banks of the Thu Bon River, conveniently flowing into the East China Sea. There is plenty of activity by the river with restaurants, bars, small shops and street markets. The night market is particularly attractive with colorful lanterns.

Walking Around Hoi An Ancient Town

The ancient town is a must-stop for any tailor-made Hoi An tours. Having been around for centuries, this old quarter still remains its ancient look, driving people into a nostalgia that can rarely be seen anywhere else. A Hoi An city tour will enable visitors to learn more about the long-lasting culture of this land, also.
Walking around the old town, travelers could easily feel the influences of different cultures in Hoi An architecture. Some highlighted attractions are Chinese Assembly Halls of the Chinese community, Japanese Bridge, Tran Family Chapel representing the typical Vietnamese architecture, and Tan

Visit Ky Old House – the cluster of all these systems.

A notable appeal of Hoi An tours is the paper lanterns, which appear in every single corner of the town. Especially, at full-moon night, the locals would float the lanterns on Thu Bon River, creating an exceptionally poetic scenery for visitors to enjoy.

Go diving to watch coral reefs

For nature lovers, don’t forget to pay a visit to Cu Lao Cham (Cham Islands) – a jaw-dropping archipelago that is only 15 km far from Cua Dai Beach, Hoi An. It is a UNESCO-designated World Natural Reserve thanks to its rich biodiversity and spectacular seascapes.
The coral reefs are definitely the first to mention when talking about the beauty of the Cham Islands. The surrounded sea possesses transparent water, thus making it easy to observe marine life.

Experience the basket boat dance in Hoi An Tour

If the mangrove palm forest is in your list of traveling, then don’t miss the basket boat dance! Basket boat is the traditional means that the local fishermen use to glide on the waters. Aside from taking Hoi An tours through the forest, it is also extraordinarily fancy to watch the boat dance. The rider will use their forces to make the boat madly spin around.

Cruise Thu Bon River to approach the local life

A cruise on Thu Bon River will ride you along the waters to observe the tranquil beauty of the surrounding area. Travelers will stop by some traditional craft villages by the river to get a closer approach to local life. Some worth-visiting places on the riverside are Cua Dai Pottery, Thanh Ha Village, and Kim Bong Village. Watching the sunset on the river is also a should-do.

Enjoy Hoi An specialties

Together with the yellow-walled houses with Confetti flowers, superb cuisine is a huge appeal of Hoi An. It is a perfect combination of different culinary systems with an incredible taste that could whet everyone’s appetite.
Do not expect for fine dining on Michelin-star restaurants, as a Hoi An food tour is for street foods. You will stop by the small vendors and food stalls on the streets to sample the mouth-watering specialties of this land. Some must-try dishes to never miss are Banh Mi – the Vietnamese variants of French baguette, “Mi Quang” – the noodle soup of Quang people, and “Cao Lau”. The savory tastes of these dishes would definitely amaze you.

Farming and Fishing Experience in Hoi An

How about a hideaway at a peaceful village in Hoi An? Here you can put all the stress and fatigue of life behind and live the mind-free days with the friendly locals. Taking a village tour, visitors will also enable to follow the locals to the farm or the river to try agricultural work like watering the veggies, cultivating rice, or catching fish. These would not be easy tasks, but the experiences you will get will definitely worth your effort.

Watch float lanterns on Thu Bon River

Similar to other eastern countries, Vietnam worships the moon, and the full moon is believed to be the most sacred time during the month. Hoi An people view the full moon as a time to worship the ancestors, to meditate, and to practice rituals. They hence started to float the lantern in the full moon. Nowadays, this lantern-floating ceremony is not only for locals but it is possible for visitors to participate in.
At full-moon nights, when the sun has set, both the locals and tourists in Hoi An start to gather along the river to prepare for the rituals. Colorful paper lanterns are lit with candles and then floated onto the waters. At around 8 pm, they will shut down the lights on the streets to let the candles shine only, making up an unbelievably magical scenery. It would be a big regret to miss soaking up this atmosphere when taking Hoi An tours.

Watch Hoi An Memories Spectacle

If fine arts are your cup of tea, then Hoi An Memories is a spectacle that you should never miss. This is the largest art performance in Vietnam that display the long-lasting culture and history of this trading port town.
Hoi An Memories show will take visitors back to hundreds of years ago when Hoi An was first established. Throughout the show, you will get a clear image of how Hoi An turned from a small fishing village into a prosperous porting town. It has jaw-dropping dances, harmonizing music, and incredible effects. All these things make up an excellent performance that you cannot take your eyes off.

Wander Hoi An Night Market

When the sun has set and the night falls, the locals will start to arrange their vendors and display their products on trolleys and tables along the sidewalks. Here visitors can find a variety of souvenirs to bring home.
This is also the paradise for foodies. You can find all Hoi An delicacies here, from awesome foods to refreshing drinks. There are also several bars and lounges nearby to chill out at night.

Stop for a quintessential photo

The evening is the best time to take a photo in Hoi An, as the whole town is dipped in the gorgeous colors of the lanterns and yellow street lamps. Not only does it look good on camera, but the scene you will see with your bare eyes are also more stunning.
The favorite check-in place for your Hoi An tours is Bach Dang Street near Japanese Bridge. The yellow walls, the paper lanterns on the streets, and the floating paper flowers on Hoai River all make up a sparkling scenery that nothing can compare to.

Cycling around Hoi An ancient town

To remain the quietness and tranquility of Hoi An, the locals here prefer to bicycle to scooters. Try cycling your bike along the quiet streets inside the town to enjoy the fresh and peaceful atmosphere of this land. Hoi An at night is quieter than in daytime as there will be fewer tourists, thus the vibe is more mesmerizing.

Not only is Hoi An a melting pot of different cultures, but this Central land is also home to many craft villages that have survived for centuries. Thanh Ha Pottery Village and Kim Bong Wood-Carving Village are two appealing destinations that Hoi An culture tours should never ignore.

Thanh Ha Pottery Village

Dating back to the 16th century, Thanh Ha Pottery Village is one of the most ceramic villages in Vietnam. The village is famous for its top-notch ceramic products, ranging from household items to high-end furniture and decorations. The reputation of the village started to bloom during the Nguyen Dynasty when its ceramics are used in the royal palaces. A Hoi An tour to Thanh Ha Pottery Village will allow you to learn to make pottery yourself. There’re impressive souvenirs to bring home, too.

Kim Bong Wood-Carving Village

This village gains a huge reputation for its carpentry craft, which has been around since the 15th century. Wood products from Kim Bong Village have been used in several important sites, including the buildings inside the Forbidden City, Hue. After centuries, the wood-making tradition is still well preserved and developed.
Taking the very first steps into the village, you could easily feel the fragrant smell of the woods. Tourists can take a bike tour around the village to visit the woodshop and factory, too.

As mentioned above, Hoi An used to be a major port, where traders all over the world gathered to do business. Consequently, cultural integration occurs, and so do the culinary systems. As a result, Hoi An nowadays is home to exceptionally rich cuisine with several appetizing delicacies. Followings are the three must-try dishes that you should never forget to try when taking Hoi An tours.

Banh Mi Hoi An

Renowned as the world’s best sandwich, “banh mi” is a Vietnamese variant of bread that has an incredible taste. Interestingly, there is no fixed recipe for “banh mi”. Different parts of Vietnam would have their own ways to diversify this food. And Hoi An is said to be one of the best stops to try “banh mi” in Vietnam.
This baguette is an excellent mixture of different ingredients. It includes pate, grilled pork, pork floss, beef, and so on. Regarding herbs, the locals would add cilantro, cucumber, mints, etc to the dish. All these things, together with the crispy outside, make up a heavenly tasty bread that everyone can’t help falling in love.
The most famous stop for “banh mi” during Hoi An tours is Banh Mi Phuong, but there are also other great stalls around the town. Just follow the local’s footprints and you will find the best places!

Cao Lau

“Pho” is famous worldwide, but in Hoi An, “Cao Lau” is a more popular name. The main ingredients for “Cao Lau” are rice noodles, char siu pork, and herbs. Interestingly, the rice must be soaked in the ash water to reach a distinctive texture and color, while the water to make broth must be taken from a thousand-year-old well inside the Old Quarter. These are what make the dish different from other kinds of noodle soups.
Quang people often eat “Cao Lau” with lots of herbs. Adding some lemon and chili will make the dish even tastier.

Mi Quang

A food tour to Hoi An, Quang Nam will never be complete if you forget to eat “Mi Quang”. It is another type of rice noodles with meat and lots of herbs. Bowls of “Mi Quang” that you will eat would never be the same due to the toppings that you want to add. You might choose pork, chicken, shrimp, egg, beef, fish, etc. Herbs are abundant, too. Peanuts and sesame rice crackers are also included in the dishes to add more flavor.
Similar to “Cao Lau”, “Mi Quang” is often served with little broth. The water contains turmeric, thus having a yellowish color. Don’t forget to try this ambrosia, or you will regret.

Biking is a great way to get the closest approach to rural life in Hoi An. A cycling tour will allow you to reach the less-known places in Hoi An that you can’t see unless you are on a bike. Taking Hoi An tours to the countryside, you will have the chance to ride the bicycle along the narrow roads through the village and the rice paddies or cross the traditional bamboo bridges hanging over the river. By chance, you can catch the image of the locals working on the fields, too.
Furthermore, a bike tour allows you to visit a local family to listen to their life stories, try to do farming, and have lunch with these lovely people.
Travelers can hire bikes at your hotels and resorts, or simply book a private biking tour with the tour operator. It is a pleasurable trip, so don’t hesitate to try!

Adventurous travelers love to ride the scooters when arriving in Vietnam. It is a great way to enjoy the scenery along the way while transferring between places.
Similar to the biking tour, a Hoi An motorbike tour will enable you to wander around and enjoy the fresh and peaceful atmosphere of the countryside. However, driving the motorbike is more challenging, thus offering you a much more thrilling experience. Moreover, with a motorbike, you can travel to further destinations like Da Nang or My Son Sanctuary.
If you are not used to driving the motorbike, you can choose to take a Vespa tour. This kind of scooter is much easier to ride.
To be able to ride the motorbike, tourists need to have a driving license and wear helmets. All these things are for the sake of your safety.
Regarding motorbike rental, it is easy to rent at hotels inside the ancient town. You can hire it from Da Nang if your visit to Hoi An is just a day trip, also.

An Bang Beach

An Bang is the most famous beach to visit in Hoi An tours. It possesses sugar-white sand surrounded by palm trees and transparent blue water. This is an ideal place to swim and bask in the sunshine.
Tourists can also participate in several fascinating watersports in An Bang Beach such as jet-skiing, parasailing, surfing, etc.

Cua Dai Beach

Before the coastal erosion has narrowed down the coastline, Cua Dai Beach used to be the best beach destination for Hoi An tours. This is where 3 big rivers (Thu Bon, Truong Giang, De Vong) unify before merging into the ocean. The soft stretching coastline of Cua Dai Beach is perfect for you to stroll along.
As tourists are turning their attention to An Bang Beach, Cua Dai is now quieter than the past. It is also home to a series of luxury beach resorts, where you can enjoy your leisure time and live your life to the full.

Cham Islands

The beaches on Cham Islands are irresistibly beautiful. It boasts clean seashores with stretching golden sand, turquoise water, and cool weather. As it is far from the mainland, the beach is less crowded with tourists, thus being ideal for a luxury getaway.
It is also a great place for scuba diving and snorkeling with irresistibly beautiful coral reefs under the water surface.

Amazing choices for your hotels in Hoian. You can select a hotel with a view of Thu Bon river, Cua Dai beach or the old town. For walking and seeing the most attractions in Hoian, we recommend you hotels in the heart of ancient town though it’s easy to get around in the small town.

DO’s in Hoi An

  • Dress modestly. Vietnam is still quite conservative and we do not highly appreciate revealing too much skin in public. Hoi An is nostalgic, so it’s better to dress properly, especially when visiting temples and historical sites.

  • Bring along bottled water. As you will need to walk a lot, you had better bring along some bottles of water. There is almost no tap water in Hoi An. If there are some, it is still not advisable to drink it because it is not clean enough.

  • Bargain the prices. Even when the overall prices are quite affordable here, it is better to try bargaining to get a better deal. Who knows when someone intent to overcharge, right? But it’s not the case with foods. Hoi An street foods are cheap actually, and the prices are almost fixed.

DON’Ts in Hoi An

  • Wear too much jewelry. Hoi An in particular and Vietnam, in general, is quite safe, but it is still better to be aware.

  • Keep all valuable properties inside the safety box. Same reason as above.

  • Wear shorts or dresses when visiting sacred places. Cultural respect is important whenever you go.

  • Show of physical affection (kissing, for example). The East is quite conservative, so don’t show off too much affection if you don’t want to be the focus of others’ attention.

  • To sum up, with breath-taking landscapes and long-lasting culture, Hoi An is absolutely an appealing destination for Vietnam trips. If you are seeking a place where you could both enjoy your leisure time and explore interesting things, this small town is definitely where you should head to.
